Corsair AX850 noise?

Post by Rajveer » Wed Aug 11, 2010 3:27 am

Does anyone know how quiet the Corsair AX850 PSUs are? I'm looking to replace my Seasonic S12 Energy Plus 650W for a new build, and can't wait for the X-850.

I'd like the system to be pretty quiet. I'll be reusing my P182 but changing all the case fans for Scythe Slipstream 1200rpm and a Scythe S-Flex for top exhaust (all speed controlled), with Akasa Apaches in push-pull for the heatsink.

I suggest you hold until at least one review (mention noise) is published.

Though it's 80PLUS gold and very high quality PSU, I heard some rumors on another forum that the fan speed is very high for AX1200 (start from 1000rpm) and it needs to be confirmed by review.

One thing to note is the AX1200 is based on a different design than that of the AX850 and AX750, and as such has a 140mm Yate Loon fan whereas the ones in the AX850 and AX750 are from Sanyo Denki. This graph looks interesting (and isn't on Corsair's website for the AX1200 model):

I wonder if it's actually 16dB? I've heard their HX model is very quiet so I'd expect it to be similar, if not quieter.

I don't know about the little HX650, but the HX-750/850 are far way noisier than something like the Antec SG-850 or the Seasonic M12D-850, or even the XFX XPS-850 Black Edition.

So I hope that AX series is quieter than the HX one, or it won't worth for silencers.

Luca

I just got my Corsair AX850 Power Supply today. Its dead quiet. Fan will only turn on if its needed.

Better an any Antec Power Supply I have ever owned.

:D

The AX750/850 are based on the Seasonic X design, so obviously we'll see performance equal to those units. AX uses the same Sanyo Denki fan as the Seasonics.

Just to add to the Joe Public's statement - here is RedBeard's post where he says that :
http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showpos ... stcount=13
The AX750 and AX850 are newer Seasonic-based designs. The AX1200 is a custom design from neither CWT or Seasonic. Reviews should be forthcoming, but the AX1200 is a rock solid product in our internal tests. We have been designing this product since the HX1000 launched - and now it's ready to go.
PS: AX1200 = Flextronics.

Yeah, the AX1200 is a different beast alltogether. It's actually kind of an interesting design, even though it can't be classified as the silent crowds PSU. (Well, PSUs that size seldom are ;P )

I was thinking about AX750 - but considering it's more expensive than the Seasonic X 750 (151,92€ vs 160,46 €) and Seasonic X 650 is even cheaper (131,05 €), it became pointless to me. But it's good to know they got everything from Seasonic X, including the fanless mode.

Yeah, it's possible the Corsairs will come down in price when they've been on the market for a while. But if you need a PSU now, get the X-650, that's the best deal.
