Promotion for Seasonic X-460, but review of X-400 ??

Post by tbessie » Tue Sep 07, 2010 5:47 pm

Hi all...

So the Seasonic review awhile back was for the X-400 model, but the promotion is for the X-460 model.

Has the X-460 even been reviewed here?

I'm assuming you mean that sarcastically, but we all know that a small difference in model nominally does not necessarily mean they have similar acoustic specs.

Would you mind elaborating your thoughts?

Elaborating ? They have same PCB, same components, same heatsinks, same cover, same everything, no fan in both... The only difference is the higher power rating and one more PCI-E cable.

Obviously the higher rated model must have better components to have that rating. The previous poster must be wrong.

Of course, and MikeC is wrong too, right ?
The parts in the X-400 FL are apparently robust enough that if it was fan cooled, it could easily be rated for 700W.

I don't see any conflict between my statement and that of MikeC.

400w fanless share most of it's components with x650 model (check on hardware secrets)

And in the end - X400 is dead silent. X650 is dead silent. X750 (not reviewed here) is dead silent. But if you have problems believing that X460 and X560 will be dead silent too, just because there was no review, then just ignore the promotion.

All I'm saying is that if 400W fanless has same guts as 650W fanned then maybe 460W fanless would have equal guts to 750W fanned unit. It would be totally weird to sell the same psu with different ratings as some of the previous posts seem to claim.

I'd definitely get a fanless seasonic if I were in the market for a new psu ATM.

Quoting dhanson865 in another recent thread:

More probably that not just a 15% difference in power rating might be due only to the two main caps (if any modification actually has been made): obviously no cap may affect noise, as already elsewhere said.

Get some decent case airflow on the X-400/460 and they'll easily do 600W+, the components inside are highly overspeced.

No, it wouldn't be weird at all. They mus guarantee in case of the 460W model that it can pull those 460W. That doesn't mean they must have different components at all - they can be made as 400W with one PCI-E connector and 460W with two PCI-E connectors, while the rest of the PSU can be exactly the same.

Yeah hardware secretscould pull 600 W from the 400w on overload test and it was still presenting extremely high efficiency (88%)
