Should We Consider Xigmatek NRP-PC402?

PSUs: The source of DC power for all components in the PC & often a big noise source.

Should We Consider Xigmatek NRP-PC402?

Post by goatsandmonkeys » Wed Oct 06, 2010 7:06 am

Tom's hardware just posted a review of power supplies under $75. One stood out a little to me from a name we are familiar with.

I woudl link to the article but I am a new member who has just been lurking up until now.

One of the interesting things about the powersupply is it was able to output over 650 watts and carries the 80+ bronze badge all for under $60. I wish I knew how loud it was and how it performed if you swap out the 120mm fan for a more quiet one.

I am curious people's thoughts on the issue.

Judging by the amount of reviews, it looks like Xigmatek's PR department has been working overtime with sending out this thing to reviewers - Madshrimps, overclockersclub, hardwarelabs.de, Technic3D - maybe even SPCR

On overclockersclub, they say it's:

994 RPM @ 0 W
1027 RPM @ 110 W
1065 RPM @ 216 W

Yet Xigmatek's own specs state:

Why almost the same RPM between zero and 200 watts? Xigmatek, do something about it :?

seems like if they upgraded the fan and had it controlled by temp not load as well as upgrading some other components they could have a killer lower cost power supply for us for $80.

If they did all that, it probably wouldn't be $80.

I don't think i have ever heard of a PSU fan that was controlled by load, ever. Doing this would make no sense, because what happens at different room temperatures?

the seasonic x400 is 70% at 22 watts
nexus value 430 is 62%
seasonix x650 is 65%
nexus nx5000 is 60%

that number is FINE

70 percent at 25 watts is 7.5 wasted watts
86 at 300 watts is 42 wasted watts.

this thing costs $60 bucks and it has around the same base line overhead as the x400.
