x-series at high load

Post by ballcall2 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:47 am

I thought of using a Seasonic x-series psu in my next build (x-560 or x-650), but from the review Mike did it is apparent that those power supplies become quite noisy a high loads (~400w), so should I instead buy the modu87+?

It seems to me that most PSUs are relatively quiet up to a load of around 50% of their nominal capacity. After that they will become noisier, at what rate and to what extent will vary from supply to supply. So if you really are going to put a 400w load on a PSU why not consider something in the 800-850w range such as Seasonic's X-850.

I would really want to buy the x-850, but it is extremely expensive in my country. But, another option I have is the Seasonic s12d-750w/850w which supposed to be the not modular version of the m12d, are they quiet like the modu87+?

How often and for how long do you expect to exceed 400watts?

Seems like you would need multiple video cards to be able to do that. Are you planning to use two or more high end video cards?

Don't forget, even gaming isn't going to generate the loads of a furmark benchmark.

X-650 as reviewed by SPCR is an outdated design. It's been replaced by the X-660. You can still buy either model but the 660 is easier to find now and will likely be cheaper for you to buy than the old 650.

The current X lineup is

560 / 660 / 760 / 850

Are you really sure your parts will be able to draw 400W? How many video cards are you planning on using? Are you thinking Crossfire / SLI or are you looking at one of the high end cards like Radeon HD 6990 or GeForce GTX 580?

Anyway if you really are doing something with the top end power wise you could consider the X760 or X850

If you aren't looking for that much wattage you could also consider going Platinum like the Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W or Super Flower 550W (same power supply two names). On the theory that higher efficiency would equal less noise.

No, the S12D 750/850 are only 80 Plus Sliver rated and aren't as quiet as the X series.

unfortunately, in my country I only have the x-400, x-460, x-560, x-650,x-750,x-850. I can't afford the 750/850 versions because they are far to expensive for me.
I going to have i5 2500k and gtx 570 (Gainward Phantom version), which consume aroung 350w, and I planing on doing some overclocking.

presumably you will only exceed 350w during gaming so maybe a bit of fan noise at load would be ok?

Yeah I guess that a bit of fan noise during gaming would be fine, but is the x-650 in the p183 would run quiter because it is isolated?

I bought the Seasonic X-760 for my new build, I wanted some headroom and I don't tottaly dont need that much.

All I can say its the best PSU I have ever head no noise what so ever, well ofcourse if you would go with ur ear to the PSU you can hear some electronical noise but you will have that will all the PSU's.

Don't think you can get any better then a 660/760 from seasonic, really nice brand!
