Is this Fortron any larger than a normal-sized PSU?

I ask because I plan on using the Zalman 7000A HSF on an Asus A7N8X-X mobo, and Zalman cautions that there must be adequate space between the HSF and the PSU.

I have a 300w forton in a antec 3700amb, using the asus p4p800 nondeluxr mobo, and the 7000alcu on the 2.4c. Everything fits with plenty of room to spare. Also the bottom grill on the fortron had to be removed because it didnt fit in my case right. But I removed it with a screwdriver in a matter of seconds.

It is normal ATX formfactor/size. Only thing worth noticing is the fangrill, which extends a few (2 or 3) millimeters below the bottom of the PSU. If you don't worry about warranty issues, and safety for your fingers, then you can simply remove this fangrill if needed. If you wanna keep the finger protection, move it inside the housing of the PSU (I have done this myself, with success).

But this would have to be one with an 80mm fan at the back? My PSU, with the 120mm fan in the bottom, has only a part of the housing with holes as the rear "grill"...

Mine has a bottom 120mm fan, i removed the grill on the bottom because the grill was causing it to not sit flat in the case. Also Vegita is AWESOME! The prince of all saiyins!!!

Added later: Sorry winston, yea I said rear instead of bottom, but I fixed it.

UPDATE: The case I'm getting (Nikao/GMC/Ahinax Zeus), is 475 mm high, so I think the Zalman 7000A should fit.

all atx power supplies should be teh same size..

what zalman was referring to is that there needs to be a gap between the edge of the motherboard and the power supply.. because the heatsink will extend past the edge of the motherboard

Also some cases mount the mobo and power supply closer together. Notice how in the picture above there is a 1 inch gap or so between the mobo and power supply. Some cases there will be hardly any gap at all!

I think Harry Azol's picture shows it very well... in a smaller case, you might get a too small distance between motherboard and PSU... so check the case before you buy it!

Harry, what case is that? Do you know the height in mm? I guess some relative measurements could increase the likelihood of it fitting. (The one I'm getting is 475 mm high, which I believe is relatively tall).

it's about 19" tall.. but teh height does not necessarily imply there will be enough space between the motherbaord and the power supply..

I found some pics of my case to-be. I believe (?) there should (?) be a gap between the mobo and PSU.

Thats gonna be close. The gap is even smaller than the one in the other pic. It will depend on the cpu placement on the mobo.

The mobo I'm going to get is the same one that Harry Azol has in his photo above.

Well its gonna be really really close then. Notice in the picture how much the heatsink hangs over the board, and in that case there is going to be even less space between the top of the mobo and bottom of the power supply.

Looking carefully at that picture you can see the standoff for the PSU. About 1cm away from the motherboard.
Knowing that the 7000 heatsink will overhang about 10mm you will have just about no margin at all. But you don't need any magin, you just need to make it fit.
If you are prepared to take off the fan grill from the PSU or open the PSU (voids warranty) to move the fan grill inside the PSU you should be able to just squeeze it in there. If you happen to be 1mm short you can fix that rather easilly with filing off 1mm on the 7000 heatsink.
I would not hessitate to go for that combination.

I just left mine one, And if the power supply messes up carefully put it back on before returning it.

you could also bend the fins on the zalman..

I think I'm just going to get a different motherboard.

i would get a different case, unless your going to be cutting out that rear fan grill the second you get it

The new motherboard I'm getting ASUS A7V600 presumably (as stated by Zalman) should be compatible regardless of the mobo and PSU positions (and therefore compatible with all cases).

yuck.. a motherboard with a via chipset? good luck with that..

Well I have Abit ATI7-MAX2 with a VIA KT400 chipset and I have no problems at all (with the chipset that is, I have plenty problems with my WD HDD and other stuff)

However VIA had serious issues with some of their chipsets a while ago.
