Whining

My HDD randomly starts whining. Sometimes the problem is there right from bootup. Sometimes it takes a while before it starts. It's a very high pitched annoying sound and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on a cause. After a reboot the problem normally stops, but sometimes it doesn't. I can't find a single constant on the problem.

That's atypical, to say the least. I've never had a drive do that. I would recommend that you contact customer support, and see if you can get an RMA.

I've had a drive do that--not too long before it died with horrific CLACK-CLACK-CLACKING sounds (we're talking days, not minutes). I'd guess it has something to do with something in the bearings failing, or something like that.

If I were you, I would STOP using this computer until getting a new hard drive of equal size or larger. Then, I'd back up the current hard drive to the new one using Norton Ghost or some other similar utility, and swap the drives. At that point, I'd stop using the old hard drive entirely--but keep it around anyway for use as an emergency recovery boot drive in case the new drive ever crashes.

Alright, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the quick responses.

You tell them every day you love them. You compliment them on their beauty and you ignore their little foibles. You keep your feet off the table. You stop inviting your buddies over to watch the game. You learn to pick up your dirty socks and put them in the bin.

Sometimes they whine anyway. I don't think anyone can figure it out.
