Will the Samsung SP1614N, even without the fabulous NIDEC motor - with the JVC motor - be significantly quieter than my (what I consider to be noisy) Western Digital 2000JB?

no one has the same ears so what may be an acceptable noise level to one user, may not be to you. the only way to figure that one out is to test one out for yourself.

I recently got a 160gig samsung from newegg with the evil JVC motor.

To my surprise, it is just as quiet as all my other samsungs. The only problem i had with it was seeks, it had hearable seek from a meter away

But as soon as i suspended it, the seeks were gone, dunno why.

I have been using it for 2 weeks now and it is great

Take your WD out of the drive cage, place a coolpak on the bottom of the case, put your WD on top of it.

No more noise (and cheaper than buying a new drive).

I've got an 80gig 2mb cache samsung w/ a jvc and it's alot quieter than my old maxtor diamondmax +8 I think it was. Quite alot.

I think that a lot of the hype around the Samsung drives with JVC motors is just 'the-sky-is-falling' rhetoric. Are there a FEW drives that are actually noisy? Probably. Is it really an epidemic? No.

If you read through the comments in the thread about Samsung drive noise, you will read that over 90% of the owners of Samsung drives with JVC motors, cannot hear any whine, without putting their ear within 6 inches of the drive (myself included.)

I think what started as a couple bad drives has escalated into a frenzy.

Okay - I'll remember to post my experiences if/when I buy my drives.

placing the drive on a coolpack in the bottom of your case is not going to get rid of the drives whine; which is why he's contemplating buying a new hard drive.

No, this is actually a real problem.

But most people don't notice it because of other noise or they don't have sensitive hearing.

Definitely replace the WD if you can hear it now (can you hear a high reasonably high pitch drone) - I replaced a similar WD drive with a spinpoint a few months ago and it made a significant difference.

I've had a bunch of WD JBs over the years and now run a pair of 1614Cs with JVC motors. "Insanely louder" would be a good way to describe the JBs, since the noise will drive you nuts.

Well, if you think that's evil I've got:

another WD1200JB, small, whiny and about to fail (makes hairdryer like sounds) fan on GeForce 4 MX440, stock Pentium 4 fan (noisy +++).

Maybe we should all recycle our old WD drives by actually making them into hairdryers - they can't be that far off already.
Their 'quiet drive technology' is a bit of a joke
