New Samsung drives officially posted. One is a 2.2 bel idle.

The above is a direct link to a PDF of Samsung's new product brochure.. scroll towards the bottom where they have the specs on some of their new audio-friendly hard drives. 2.2 bels idle, wow.
But will we find these at the local screwdriver shop? Probably not.
Manufacturer websites are full of drives that you can't find anywhere.

Just a reminder to everyone, these numbers don't necessarily correlate with actual sound noise. This is the absolute sound energy coming out of the drive.
The 2.2 Bel figure is for the 5,760 RPM? drive. (Strange to me, since I thought they only came in 5.4kRPM and 7.2kRPM, in addition to 10k & 15k). For reference, they rate the P80 series, the Samsung we know and love as 2.7 Bels.
The rumored 200GB Samsung (the P120 family) is 2.5 Bels and will come in ATA-7 and SATA 2 flavors.
For reference, they rate their 2.5" drives as 2.2Bels as well.

Now we just have to wait for these to possibly see the light of day. I noticed on pg. 15 of the PDF they were doing the second-gens in two phases (these obviously being the second since they're native SATA II) but the stupid press release didn't give any dates
. Bah. Ah well, good find anyway, technarch, it was informative while yet being vague and uninformative

Interesting that Samsung also gives the same acoustical specs for the SP1614N two-platter 160 GB as the SP0812N 80 GB single platter drive:

I don't think so. If those numbers are based on worst case scenario, then all they have to to make it more low noise in idle is to only use Nidec motors. I do believe that a single platter HD with JVC motor can be noisier than a two platter HD with Nidec motor.
I wonder if they will stop using JVC, or if we will have the never ending search for HD's with Nidec motors this time too....

The list on page 2 of the PDF also mentions SP1212N, but there's no other information about it. That would mean one-platter sweetness...

I have 3 Samsungs right now but I was going to change brands on my next computer for at least one drive because I wanted more space, mainly for my PVR program - I record alot of tv shows. Now that they announced this though I think I will stay with Samsung.
Even if they come with JVC motors they will stiill be worth it in my opinion.

Yay, new spinpoints, and single huge platter drives! 600 000 hours MTBF also, but only for the SATA drives for some reason.

The press release mentions that Samsung has created a 400GB drive "Samsung has succeeded in producing the 400 Gigabytes hard disk drive, constructed from three 133 Gigabytes per platter disks."
But there is no further mention of this 400GB drive in the press release or on their Web site. Strange...

I was having a look at the UK Samsung site and there's no mention of any hard drives whatsoever.
Have they pulled them from the British market or are they just not making any noise about them?

Strange that there missing but then again the Samsung UK site is not always that up to date.
Plenty of places sell samsung hard drives in the UK so they must be selling, pulling out wouldn't make much sence when the company is always expanding?

The range was there until at least the back end of last year because I got the spec info on a 5400rpm 3.5" drive for my Xbox.
Perhaps the main European site now looks after that division?

yeah, then when you have a question that requires a couple paragraphs to answer, they usually briefly address one issue with a couple word and dismiss everything else you asked, making your whole e-mail pointless. Thats the way customer support works i guess.

I dunno what they're up to..perhaps they are doing a sort of soft launch for the range.
Maybe it will be a one or two at a time in different regions.
Anyway, for mega-backup purposes in the meantime, I've ordered a WD3200JB. It's going to be used in an external case and won't be on that often, so any associated noise will be less of an issue. If other members reports are right it's should be pretty decent whatever.
