Hi. I have been looking for HDD decouplers. Anyone has used these:





It looks like the one with heatsinks should be better in cooling the HDD. Any suggestions/ideas?

Remember the good old days, when all drive bays were 5.25 inches? Sure would make decoupling of a 3.5 inch drive a lot easier.

The heatsinks look better. You'd need that additional cooling capacity in a 5.25 inch bay unless you have active cooling.

I have a zalman hd cooler. It really works. Im going to suspend it like a love swing in a few days when I am off again.

A bit of topic, but I just got my nexus disktwin couple of days ago and I gotta say they are great. Even thought the temps went a bit up (33c now) they really cut down the whine and seek noise compared to hard mounting.

I tried the ones without a heatsink, the drive temperature incerased a lot (as expected actually) so I were forced to use a fan, which made additional noise so I just removed these things.

The temps normally should be lower, not raised against "normal" built in harddisks.

I guess the extra airflow at the bottom of the case cooled better then the heatsinks. Besides the temps were pretty low to begin with (29c). Anyway I move my comp around alot so I preferred firm attachment to couple of extra degrees.

I use the second ones (without a heatsink). The temperature of the drive rises significantly but so far works *shrug*. The things that have those tiny grommets sort of thing (like in the first heatsink picture) work noticeably worse.

OK, I purchased the nexus silencers. They do make the drive quieter, with less whine and less seek noise, but it does not make it silent. I guess nothing will. The temperatures go up by about 5ºC, still within tolerance (around 41ºC now, at 21.5ºC room temp), because my seagate barracuda is supposed to work within 0-60ºC. This summer I may have to add a new fan, though.

I got some of the Nexus type units from Comp USA. The did not work in one case, but worked fine in another. The one issue is that the holes on these units are in a strange place. So if your system uses rails it may be a real pain to get the screws to line up. My rail holes were a 1/2 inch off so I had to force them to fit.

I just let them without screws; they fit well, because the rubber is sticky (and smelly). I had to put a 92 mm nexus fan at 5V in front of them, because they were getting too hot (46ºC and rising). Now they stay below 40ºC with no additional noise. I have a silent system at last!!
