Flaw in the SLK3000B's drive cage?

Post by BrianF » Tue Apr 19, 2005 3:28 pm

Am I crazy, or is there a bit of a flaw in the drive cage?

I mean, sure, the drives are mounted by rubber gromets, but they each sit on four metal folds in the cage. I found I had to "fudge" my drive up a bit so that it didnt contact the metal.

I'm thinking those folds in the metal should be bent up so that there is no chance of the drive wiggling its way down on to them and making contact....

Well if any contact is made between the little legs and the drive itself, it should only be minor contact. The major contact is between the rubber and the drive itself, when screwed in. That's where most of the vibration should be travelling across.

Yeah, I wish the cage was built differently as well.

I ended up using pliers to bend those "shelves" out of the way, as I was mounting my drive with little sorbothane squares I had cut up, in lieu of the included mounts.

Way too much vibration was being transferred through the rather stiff grommets shipped with the thing... Made things a lot more quiet after the mod.

I must be one of the only few who has not had issues with those drive mounts. Maybe my AccoustiPak blocks any of it from my ears, but I have no problems at all. I have two Samsung Spinpoints in my cage.

My ATA Barracuda 7200.7 vibrated like hell  I had to remove the drive cage.

I first tried to mount my SpinPoint using the included rubber as well, but couldn't get rid of the seek noises... So I had to remove all metal things as well, and then got just enough room for elastic suspension. Which works just great! And keeping the drive cage like this gives room for enough disks :D

Yea i just put in a samsung into the 3000b drive cage and it rattles aswell.

I'm going to probably remove the cage, or modify it soon.

SLK300B Drive Cage

I have two SLK 3000B's. My 36GB raptor in one of my cases was causing a ton of very audible vibration. A Zalman ZM -2HC2 made a big difference in terms of reducing the vibration. As far as seek noise goes the Zalman barely made a diference. If you have a cooler running drive a no vibes III should work even better.
