Are Seagate NCQ drives louder?

Post by cyberknight » Wed Apr 20, 2005 10:41 pm

I heard ppl talk about NCQ drives being noiser. Is this true? And by how much? Are they still quieter in general compared to other brands?

Or should I just go for an 8MB cache IDE version?

I was just reading it and came here looking for discussions.

Notice how quiet the WD Raptors are. Practically identical to the Samsung Spinpoints when active! I don't know about you, but the credibility of their results took a sudden nosedive for me.

for a bit of hilarity, try the mp3's they posted of drive noise recordings. i'm not sure how exactly you make a 128kbps mp3 sound so awful without deliberately re-encoding it a dozen times.

well actually, i'm guessing their recording system was so bad they ran some extremely intense noise filters over it, giving us the mostly useless sound files they posted.

For some additional fun compare the recordings for the Raptor and SP 1614N during activity. Even in their overprocessed form there is a distinct difference in the loudness. Their chart claims that one is 52.5 db and the other 52.4, but their own evidence doesn't back that.

Anyway, the soundclips are mostly useless.

I'm pretty sure that my DM10 wouldnt reach 58.4 dB if it caught fire and the platters fell out while spinning.

Where did they take those readings, under a freeway overpass?

I had four of these in a system, and they are a bit quieter than the 7200.7's that I have. They do run warmer than any other HD in my experience, though I have not ever used the new WD or the newest Maxtors...

BTW, does your HD controller support NCQ? If not, then it may not be worth the trouble.

It could be very accurate. Look at their test setup:

-AMD Athlon64 3500+ (2.2Ghz)
-Giga-byte GA-K8NXP-SLI
-NVIDIA 6600GT SLI Edition (single 128MB card)
-1GB (512MBx2) Corsair XMS4400

No mention of their heatsink, case or PSU. If the hard drives are not the quiestest things in your setup, then you shouldn't be surprised to see only marginal noise differences.
