New hard drive?

Post by ProjectNXS » Mon Aug 22, 2005 9:59 pm

I cannot stand it anymore; the JVC SP0812C is making so much high-pitched whine that it drowns out even the cheap-ass power supply unit AND cranky CNPS7000B-AlCu that has a fan that is about to go off or is just old. It is a single loudest component of the computer, or at least the most bothersome. So I am looking for a new hard drive... And here are the ones I have narrowed down to:

Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB (yes folks, I can still find a few, believe it or not)
Samsung SP0822N/SP1614N (that is, if I can score a Nidec one, and I wasn't lucky last time)
Western Digital WD1600JB (lowest-rated noise level of their lineup, but still a little iffy)

So, what are your opinions?

Do you need large capacity? 2.5" drives smoke 3.5" in terms of noise and 80GB Samsungs aren't too expensive these days.

Sorry to suggest something that wasn't on your list, but I noticed that you're not considering terribly large sizes.

Actually, that's not a bad idea, considering I am willing to shell out $100 or so for a hard drive; how much do you think they will be?

SPCR reviewed a bunch of 2.5" drives. They indeed smoke the 3.5" ones, but are still loud. If you put your ear next to one, they still sound like helicopters. But they don't get hot so you can muffle them in thick foam and double muffle them in thick lead or uranium.

western digital = permanent no

they are always noisy. besides raptors odd right

id go either NEW 200gb samsung if you want it to last a long time in a system or else id go 2.5 drive from the list. anything in middle, 80-160gb, is not going to be nidec, I havent seen one in stores that carry it in many months.
