JVC Motors on Samsung 200GB & 250GB Spinpoints

Post by mrk22 » Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:49 pm

There has been some speculation that Samsung is no longer using JVC motors on its newer drives. As you may know, Microcenter sells Spinpoint drives in clear plastic cases and the motor is visible. While I was there, I took inventory of what they had:

250GB SATA: 14
250GB PATA: 11
200GB PATA: 18
Total: 43 drives.

All the drives had Nidec motors.

I think that Samsung still will use JVC motors, depending on demand. This is based on a conversation I had with someone from Samsung Australia.

Why would there be a demand for JVC motors? They're inferior to the nidecs in every way, or am I mistaken?

If there was a demand for such a number of hard drives that nidec wouldn't be able to make enough motors for. At least samsung is distributing the motors between the drives non randomly. They should take that a step further and use only JVC motors with 0.5 platter and 1.5 platter hard drives.
