Hitachi 7K250 - VERY annoying idle whine

Post by speedy » Mon Mar 06, 2006 1:01 am

As a data point, my HDS722525VLSA80 sample has a VERY annoying / loud idle whine, and I'm in the process of replacing it with Samsung SP2504C.

Have you tried low RPM mode?
We are particularly interested in the acoustic potential of the Low RPM Standby. Spinning the disc at a lower speed (~60% of normal) is a good way of reducing power draw without halting the drive entirely, but it may also have the secondary benefit of producing less noise.

Nah, the idle whine sounds sooo awful.. Better to get rid of it, I'm even suspecting of a faulty sample. (although it worked for about 5-6 months in my box, with motor turned off for most of the time in power save mode)
