I had my HDDs wedged into a drive bay with foam and rubber bands to prevent them from sliding all around during transportation. When I turned on the system again, I noticed my HDD temp was at 43C. Then I realised, OH DUUUUUUUUUH!!!! I forgot to undo the packing job. So I promptly shut down, and went back to my usual configuration of placing the HDDs on foam. Then I started up the box again, and it's not recognising either of my HDDs! What's going on?

Probably just a loose power or data cable. HDDs are pretty rugged - I've had lots of times when I thought I damaged one, only to figure out there was a loose connection or incorrect jumper configuration.

bad news. my 120gb is beeping. My 20gb isnt recognised either. I replugged the cables and everything.

That heat level is quite low, AFAIK many SPCRers have temps much higher (typical temps of 45°). Check that there isn't a third thing that is incorrect (improperly inserted ram, power cable etc etc).

Checked all that first. Not being recognised.

It might be a problem with the bios. I would change the bios to default settings or reset it altogether.

Static Electricity f***ing up a controller chip? Keep in mind that the level of static electricity needed to kill a chip is lower than what humans can typically feel.

The WD drives have the PCB mounted upside down, with the chips on teh inside.

I am just naive here? Your hard drive beeped?

@Trunks: Yes. I can make an mp3 of it to prove.

Try a few other configurations... ie try the same hard drives on a different computer.

I will when I get around to it, at least I have no school tomorrow to play around w/the HDDs.
