Do 2.5" drives come in different heights?

Post by SixToes » Thu Jun 01, 2006 5:02 am

I recenly bought a 30Gb IBM Travelstar HD from eBay to replace the 10Gb Travelstar in my old Dell Inspiron 4000 PIII 700. It arrived, I took out the old drive, went to put in the new drive - and it doesn't fit! It seems too high to slide into the enclosure in the side of the Dell. The old drive is shorter by about 4mm (from memory).

My question is am I being chicken and not pushing in the new drive hard enough, or are there different types of 2.5" drive form factor with different heights?

Thanks for your help!

Wow, how tall is the 30GB hard drive? All the hard drives reviewed on SPCR are 9.5mm height, if you managed to get a 12.7mm hard drive, then you might be in trouble. But honestly, I haven't seen 12.7mm hard drives since the 486 days.

What he^ said. However I find it strange that there even exist 30GB drives in 12mm format.

As above yes. Today's version is 9.5mm, a few years ago there was 12.5mm about, and the caddy in my old Toshiba Satelite could handle 16mm so I presume that existed at some stage!

Also, some server drives are now being made in the 2.5" form factor, although I haven't seen any that aren't SCSI / SAS. These are generally around twice the height of the notebook drives that we're used to. I don't have any exact measurements at the moment though.

Devonavar, do you know of any such server drives other than savvios?

Also, Seagate said they'd be making 2.5 inch desktop/appliance drives. I would expect that those would be as thick as savvios. They seem to really be dragging their feet about it though.

Fujitsu's Server lineup has several 2.5" SAS drives.
