esata = sata?

Post by computergeek22 » Thu Jun 08, 2006 9:25 am

I have a 74gb raptor and my a8r32 has an esata plug. Is there any way that I could put my HD far away from my computer and achieve no performance loss. I was thinking of getting a cable that converts esata to sata and also a sata power cable extender that's at least 6 feet long to allow me to put my HD away from my case. Any suggestions?

You could put the Raptor in an eSATA enclosure, which would provide adapter, power and protection in one go. Make sure it has decent cooling though, they're not usually designed for 10K RPM drives.

Just a reminder that the max cable length for eSATA is 2m.

If you buy an eSATA external enclousure with a power adapter, you
don't need to take the power of your pc.
Maximum length of eSATA cable without loss is 2 meter.
Don't know if there are longer ones, never spotted them.
If you need more length, I think that a NAS with LAN is a better but
expensive solution.
I guess it's easier to move your PC outside your room and extend
your monitor and keyboard/mouse cables.
15 meter should be no problem with good extensions.
Result.. no more noise.
Combine this with KVM's and you can even control two pc's in another room, or one pc with two keyboards/mouses.
And if you need a DVD close by, buy an external powered USB2.0 DVD-writer/reader and with good cables you can put it on a pc in the next room.

Tip for future home builders. Include a small room, like a toilet room,
but for putting a PC (Like a server room). And provide ps/2 and usb sockets in the walls. :D
