home made IDE cable, need help

** i don't know if it is the right place, if not plz move this thread **

i was thinking of making my DVD sit out side of my case...
i want to make a IDE cable, there is no real problem
just get the the wire and put the "end" on each side but!!!
i need to know...
what is the max length of and IDE cable ?
how long is the IDE i can make before it wont work fine

According to several sources, 18" (about 45 cm) is the standard maximum.
