I'm not convinced that anyone has sufficient information on ANY hard drive's reliability until that drive is out of production. Truly, this does not improve the shopping process.

Next question so i don't open another thread:
Is this drive still considered the best in acoustics and low operating temp? I've read the recommended list.

Another question I've seen asked a few times, but never answered is whether the WD 2500KS is as good as the WD 5000KS. As I understand it, the 2500KS came out long before the 5000KS. With the release of the 5000KS, were any improvements made besides size?

Well, if you want to look at a small sample, every one of the customer reviews for the 2500KS at NewEgg I looked at (I didn't look at them all, just the latest) talk about having to RMA their drives. Could just be a bad batch. Anyone else want to comment?

I found reviews there with no mention of RMA or failure, and I didn't even read all 607 of them. (And my newish WD2500KS works fine except for the temperature-reporting bug.)

Please give more info on your new drive please. What temp reporting bug?

This looks like a really good drive, as I'm not sure I need a half terabyte yet. Do you know if the 5000KS has other improvemetns, besides size, over the 2500KS?

Pretty much everything I can say is in this thread. If you want more details about the temp issue, see here.

I have both 2500KS and 5000KS

Post by hsinhow » Thu Aug 24, 2006 1:44 pm

I have both 2500JS (10 months old)/2500KS (2 days old) and 5000KS (2nd one, 2 weeks old) in my PC.

I RMA'd my first 5000KS due to bad sectors and low performance (due to bad sectors?). The 2500JS and first 5000KS also seem to have problem with my new power supply (Antec Neo and then Seasonic S12) that frequently failed at booting up. With these experiences, reliability/quality is a concern...

The 2nd 5000KS has later built date (6/06 while the 1st one is built on 3/06) and works well. Benchmarks also show the 5000KS performs much better than 2500KS probably due to higher density disks in 5000KS. You can find the benchmark results on StorageReview for both dirves.

Anyway, quietness is a high priority for me and, secondly, the local computer store had promotions on 2500KS ($76) kept me on the WD hard drives.

That thread is from a few months back. Thanks, Hammer.

Glad to hear your feedback, hsinhow. Later date might help.
