Hard drives!

Post by Mussels » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:42 pm

Well hello all, i'm out to upgrade my storage and i've hit a problem.

Currently, i run small drives (10GB upto 120GB's) to boot the OS from, and then samsung SP2504C's for storage. Problem is, they arent big enough anymore and i need to get more storage in my server system.

I need silent drives which points me at samsung/seagate, but lately seagates have been getting slower and a lot hotter, which doesnt bode well for me.

Samsung have got a few new 300GB models and 400GB, and the 300 is at a steal of a price ($140 aussie) but its got the same problem as the seagates: its gone slow. around 15% slower than the 250GB's i already have.

Does anyone have any suggestions here as to decent, _Silent_ hard drives these days? They need be SATA-II and preferably have NCQ.

All comments are appreciated! thanks!

WD Caviar SE16 500GB: Big Low-Noise Champ?

Dunno what the price is, but there's a thread on these forums that praises both the Samsung T133 300 and 400 GB models.

that WD drive looks good, but at $400 aussie for a 500GB drive, its a lot less $-per-MB than what i'd like.

Could you find a link to the thread you mentioned about the samsungs? i tried searching, but i couldnt find it.
