The quietest drive: 3.5" WD 500GB vs your/any 2.5"

The 3.5" WD 500GB (WD5000KS/RS) has been stated and not disputed as the quietest 3.5" desktop HD manufacturered within the past few years.

2.5" HDs are generally regarded as being quieter, if not significantly quieter than the 3.5" counterparts.

Are 2.5" HDs quieter than the 3.5" WD 500GB?

Based on SPCR's official reviews (dBA values only), it would seem to indicate 2.5" is quieter or equivalent in noise of the WD 500GB. However, sample variance seems to be commonplace and recognized by MikeC (one drive of the same model being different from another). There's also pitch variance and real-world use variance (e.g. vibrations) that isn't taken into consideration.

In your personal experience, what was quieter and why?

Thanks for your time[/b]
