What are you going to do with your PC? Raptors are a real waste of money for most people.

Look at this real world test of Raptors Vs. 7200RPM counterparts.

Typically Raptors are around 5% faster, yet cost over six times more per MB. Personally I would rather wait another 0.8 seconds than pay that kind of price differential.

However, its a totally different story if you use applications that benefit from high STR, like video editing.

The way I see it, the Raptor is worth its price. I find that having a dedicated fast HDD for OS, applications and games, and one or more large capacaty HDDs for storage, speeds up my general "computer experience".

The Raptor 36GB is around $100 and the 74GB is around $150. Sure you can buy a Hitachi Deskstar 80GB for $45 and while the Raptor 74GB cost more than thrice that, for me it's still worth it. Until solid state becomes a real option the Raptor is one of those things that survives several system upgrades, like an expensive TFT or case. I rather save that $100 on the graphics card or something else that really loses value fast.

But if you plan to only use one HDD, don't make it a Raptor. It's much to expensive to use for storage. Only the 36GB and 74GB are interesting for me. I think the 150GB is overkill for most people.

It's worth noting that the latest 74GB Raptor is a single platter whereas the first generation 74GB Raptor was 2 platters. The 150GB Raptor is also 2 platters.

I have a Raptor 150GB, but if you ask me, I'll definatly go with a 74GB, it is more than enough to run my OS and aplications, and I would use other 7200rpm HDD for storage.

I'm entirely with Vicotnik.

Well, this being a forum about silent PCs, I'm gonna drop a line about my 150Gb rap.
It is very loud while seeking. Believe me, very very loud. The loudest non-SCSI monster I ever heard the past 5-6 years.

I don't know about the 74G rap, but I know I'm gonna kick this baby out. The extra performance is not worth the noise, in my case.

Nobody is denying the seeks are loud, they are. But idle noise is among the best 3,5" drives. It's up to you if its worth it..
