Raptor 150GB 10k to be replaced... what should I get?

Post by zerok66 » Tue May 22, 2007 2:49 am

Hi Guys,

Well I got a raptor before I decided I was going silent (literally days before  ).

I would like to replace this with something quiet and large... 300, 400, 500GB? What are the BEST drives to get noise-wise that have similar performance to the raptors?

Cheers,

Get the 500GB version, its no noisier than the 400GB version, and not much more expensive.

What is the performance of these drives like? I have read a few times there are some Seagate drives out there not far off the pace?

Isn't the raptor rather silent?

It is nice and quiet when it is doing nothing... as soon as it starts seeking it grinds like a b!tch... I need soemthing that is quieter.

If I was to go for 2.5" drives I could actually use elastic and suspend them. Are there any decent performing 2.5" drives out there?

Yes, there are 10K and even 15K 2.5" SAS drives which wipe the floor with the raptor :D ordinary notebook SATA disks, well, they are 7200RPM at most so expect some performance drop from the raptor -- but less than a 3.5" one. That's my understanding.

Can you stick a SAS drive on a normal sata controller?

One possibility: keep your raptor and put it in a Smart Drive 2002. It won't be silent, but it will be quiet.

"Yes, there are 10K and even 15K 2.5" SAS drives which wipe the floor with the raptor"

Do they really?

Because if you take a look at those Single-User Suite 4.0 scores, you may notice both 10krpm and 15kprm being beaten by both Raptor 150 and Raptor X. Hell, even 7200rpm T7K500 can beat both Savvios!

AFAIK, we aren't talking about server workloads.

"ordinary notebook SATA disks, well, they are 7200RPM at most so expect some performance drop from the raptor -- but less than a 3.5" one."

Did I misinterpret you or did you actually say 7200rpm 2.5" drives have less performance loss when compared to 7200rpm 3.5" versus Raptor, i.e did you just say 3.5" HDD perform worse than same rpm 2.5" counterparts?

Where you get all this **** or do you come up with it yourself?

Unlike you I have the talent to find some actual proof to back-up my claims.
