Quietest DVD burnerz

Post by sheninat0r » Mon Oct 29, 2007 2:56 pm

Just a quick question - what's the quietest DVD burner out there?

I had heard good things about Plextor, but apparently now they don't make their own drives, so I'm clueless. Any help?

The quietest is probably also the slowest. :?

I am not sure there is a quiet DVD burner by SPCR standards, unless it's really slow. Personally I am going with a Samsung next, because they make decent drives. I think they attempt some noise reduction in their drives, but haven't studied it much yet.

Speed isn't my biggest concern... I usually only use my burner for making occasional backups and ripping audio CDs.

So if I find, say, an 8x DVD burner, it will be quieter than a 16, 18, or 20x?

I have a Pioneer DVR-112D drive and I'm quite happy with it. It's pretty quiet for an optical drive and doesn't vibrate too much. Also, it has superior burning quality characteristics than any of the above mentioned drives.

HD DVD reader? A bit overkill... and it doesn't say anything about how loud it is when it reads/burns regular DVDs.

How are Asus' regular DVD burners noise-wise? I'll take a look at that Pioneer...

I've got the Samsung S203-SH SATA DVD-RW. First off, the thing is way quieter than any other DVD reader/writer I've owned. It's also much faster than my nearly new lite-on. Lastly, I've read some reviews, this thing is really awesome. Great at reading scratched discs, more accurate than most for audio ripping. Of course these are all subjective metrics, but I just ordered another one cause I like this one so much.

My experience with recent DVD burners. Level of vibration is determined by whether the noise is reduced when I press down on my Antec Sonata v1's front door.

DW1655 - Noisy + whine at 16x read. Minimal vibration.
LG H42N - Very Noisy at 16x read. No whine. Vibration very bad.
Sony DRU830A - Noisy at 16x read. No whine. Minimal vibration

The Sony is actually a Samsung SH182D 18x dvd writer.

RAM is the most reliable (through hardware means) media for modifying disk contents.
What DVD writer is good at RW writing quality and can write to DVD-RAM?

Pleople, who need the most reliable (through hardware means) format for modifying disk contents.
RW is not reliable for modifying disk contents at all in my experience.

If you use software like Nero Drive Speed to slow down the DVD player, almost all of them are reasonably quiet. This will not appreciably slow down the time it takes to burn a CD or DVD since they all start up slow and then speed up toward the end, so the average speed is not that high to begin with.

Yes, but some burners like Sony Nec AD-7200S write RWs with unreadable errors toward the end.

Pioneer DVR-216D seems popular. I'm pleased with mine, less noisy than other DVD readers/writers I've tried. There's a thread about it here.

d: I don't think many cares about DVD-RAM or DVD-RWs. I burn the occasional DVD-R or DVD+R, sometimes a CD-R. I don't see the point of bumping 1+ year old threads just to point out that a certain burner lacks DVD-RAM capabilities.

I recently put together a pc, containing a samsung SH-S223F. I noticed when booting the ultimate boot cd that it only "clicked" a few times, without speeding up a lot. During continious access you do hear it, but it's not so bad (more noise than a good hard drive though). It also vibrates a bit. Ofcource it's possible that there is even better out there (i would find it strange if it were not). Good luck with your search.

Vicotnik! What is a connection between a 1+ year thread age and what I wrote in the thread?

Oh Rly?
:D

Pioneer's DVR's line always consisted of two versions...one with DVD-RAM writing capability and one without...

being that hd's are cheaper than removable media.....

i just never follow this line of thought. plus, hd's stored offline in an airtight box in a cool place could last indefinitely where home brew dvd's of any sort will die years later.
