WD GP drives now 7200 RPM?
Here's a link to Buy.com's WD GP 500GB drive that they claim is pure 7200 RPM (no variable speed mentioned). Could they now be shipping a newer version of the venerable GP series?

Not a single one of WD's drives have variable speeds (unless you count off as a speed), have a look through the forums, and you will find some heated discussions on the matter (many by myself) about the actual RPM of WD's GP drives. Here's a link to Buy.com's WD GP 500GB drive that they claim is pure 7200 RPM (no variable speed mentioned).
The outcome should you not want to read the entire thread is that all of WD's GP line so far released are a fixed speed of 5400-rpm, and unless you see a review of a WD GP drive that states otherwise dont believe what you read by the sellers (or WD).

That I'm well aware of. However, I've never seen a site which carries a GP drive that claims it is a 7200 RPM with no mention of, however incorrect it may be, variable speed. WD may have slipped in a new batch with the higher invariable rotational speed, but it's more than likely that is not the case, as others have posted seeing this on other vendors' sites as well.
