Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B 1TB opinions?

Post by nd4spdbh » Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:32 am

OK guys im looking for some extra storage in my server on the cheap. There is a person locally selling the HDT721010SLA360 aka 7k1000.B 1TB hds brand new unopened and said he would take 40 bucks.

How are peoples luck with them. Are the quiet... thats the main thing is that they are super quiet. I currently have a hitachi 500gb p7k500 in my server and its like wd's green power in that its hitachi's eco line. although it spins at 7200 rpm constant, it is SUPER quiet.

Opinions on the 1tb plz before i pull the trigger.

Thanks Ben H

For $40 flat I'd buy it immediately. I own one and qualitatively, its airborne idle noise is pretty quiet. The vibrations are not so great though, so you might want to suspend it. I use mine open-air in a dock, so I can't say much more about it inside a case, but I'd imagine it would be pretty quiet if you suspend it to get rid of the vibrations. Even so, at $40 it's far cheaper than any price you could hope for without jumping through elaborate rebate, cashback, and/or price matching loops.

I guess it just goes to show how these issues are highly subjective. I held mine when it was seeking and the vibrations are greater than any of my other drives, even with AAM on (mostly WD GP). I can feel the vibrations through the table when it's sitting in its dock seeking. Note though that I'm using a cheap IKEA table with just a surface and four legs. A nice office desk would probably be more sturdy. Idle noise is still nice and low though. Definitely needs suspension.

Does he have any more? For that price, I'd buy five or six of them for my servers and a sweet RAID1 array.

Can you send me his details so that I can order a few?

Thanks!

Cheers,

Xious
