Quiet and low viberation external harddrive enclosure??

Post by johnniecache7 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 3:37 pm

Hello,

Can anyone recommend quiet and low viberation external USB 2.0 harddrive enclosure. I just resently tryed the Vantec Nexstar CX and I swear this thing makes my whole desk viberate. I can feel it threw the table top. I can't even leave it turned on or it drivers me nuts.

Have you tried felt feet? They will all transmit some vibration.

I thought of something like but then it likely make the stand unstable and flop over. I don't mind changing the whole thing but this my first external and I'm not totally sure they all don't viberate so I'm looking for recommendations on new enclosure.

All compact drive enclosures will transfer roughly the same vibration levels since they are all hardmounted within the enclosure (needed since they dont have any active cooling so need to use the enclosure as a heatsink).

The problem is the hard drive. You need to replace the hard drive.

Afraid until I pull the data off that's not possible would something like WD Geen really make that much of difference? Don't all harddrives viberate during spin up? I'm under the impression they do, 5400 or 7200 rpm.

The vibration is coming from from a moving part. The only moving part you have connected is your hard drive correct?

So the vibration that "makes my whole desk vibrate" is coming from the hard drive. If it is making your whole desk vibrate, that seems like a lot of vibration.

Ok, I think I solved my problem what if I use notebook 5400rpm harddrive in 2.5 external HDD enclosure. I assume they won't vibrate like the desktop drive at 7200 rpm.

Any drive vibrates, in any kind of external enclosure, some more, some less. Just try those soft feet, they won't render it dangerously unstable and will improve your situation with the lowest possible cost.
