WD15EARS-00MVWB0 - 2 or 3 platter drive?

Post by ck8-04 » Thu Dec 02, 2010 1:27 pm

I just received a WD15EARS at my door and it has a revision code of 00MVWB0. I know that a WD20EARS-00MVWB0 exists, but this is the first time I have seen this code on a WD15EARS. Does anyone know how many platters this drive uses?

I'm not aware of any platter density higher the 667GB, currently.

WD shipped 3TB drives with 750GB platters for quite some time.

ck8-04, it's easy to find out if you have a kitchen scale. One older 1.5TB EARS (00z5b1) is ~627 grams. If yours is the same, it's 3 platter.

Let us know.

Here is the bottom of the drive:

My WD10EADS-00L5B1 has the exact same frame. I think this WD15EARS is indeed a 3 platter drive. I'll weigh the drive once I find a scale just to be sure.

The ribs on the bottom of the drive don't look tall enough for a 2-platter model.

That is my thought exactly. Like I said, I'll grab a scale and weigh both the WD10EADS and the WD15EARS just to make sure.

This post is simply a bump, I'm curious to see if any 2 platter 1.5tb's are shipping yet

Doing a bit of searching it appears to be using 667gb platters, possibly 5 heads, so only 2.5 sides of the platters will be used, then slightly short stroked.

I bought new WD Green 1.5TB drive WD15EARS-32MVWB0 (made in November 2010 in Thailand) and I found it to be much slower in comparison to 00MVWB0 version. I saw benchmarks of 00MVWB0 (having 667 GB platters) showing 122-65 MB/s read speed with average 98 MB/s. My 32MVWB0 drive has only 97-36 MB/s with average 72 MB/s, which is even slower than old 500 GB platters version. 36 MB/s at the end of the drive is really awful...

What can be the size of platters of this drive? I checked its weight and it is 628g, so it should be 3 platters drive...

Drive is alligned correctly (partitioned & formated in Windows 7 x64). One week ago I had Samsung F2 in PC and it was much faster (88 MB/s average), but also louder...
