SSD on a pci-e 16x slot

would it make sense in a cost and performance to have SSD on a 16x pci-e slot?
does SSD saturate the 1x bandwidth?

more bandwidth than SATA and pci-e 1x. not sure about latency.

some users may prefer a gpu on one 16x slot and a 512Gb SSD on a 16x pci-e slot.

could it be done affordablely?

Seeing how no one makes a 16x PCI-E SSD, there would be no point. A 1x device will perform at 1x regardless of what slot you put it in.

M.2 is now a better format moving forwards anyway.

I'm interested in this.
I'm looking into upgrading motherboard+CPU and so far I've only found four Z97 motherboards that
support M.2 at PCI-e 3.0 x4 speeds. Asrock's Z97 Extreme6 and Extreme9. Asus Z97 Maximus VII Impact
and some other Asus motherboard that I've only heard about.
Mostly others are either PCI-e 2.0 x2 or x4. Seems that easiest way to spot it is to look into specs
and reading what ports using M.2 disables.

So instead of waiting to there be more motherboards with that option, I considered about getting
SLI motherboard and later using the other x16 port for M.2 to PCI-E Gen.3 x4 adapter.
You know, when you can actually get M.2 at that speed and with reasonable price.

And don't ask why I'm obsessed about getting M.2 Ultra, as Asrock and Asus calls it, maybe I just get impressed with big numbers. :/
Or I might be procrastinating in fear of finding out how much this upgrade will end up costing me.
