Best yet Silent Barton 3200+ HSF

Post by extreme4377 » Sat Feb 28, 2004 4:56 pm

What hsf would be the best to cool my 3200+ well enough to warrant some minor overclocking yet remain silent? I'm looking at the TT Silent Boost currently but I am a strong TT hater. Money really isn't an object but I don't want to go with H20 cooling. Any recommendations?

Well, I'm not sure how much overclocking it would allow, but I am using the Nexus AXP-3200 SkiveTek cooler on my Thoroughbred 2400+, and I like it a lot.

Another possibility--and probably your best bet for overclocking, would be the Zalman 7000A-AlCu, assuming your motherboard has the mounting holes and the room for it.

If on the other hand, you do NOT have the space on your motherboard for the Zalman, then I'd recommend the Nexus. It weighs only 331 grams, and fits practically ANY Socket-462 motherboard.

I had my 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ and never had my temps read over 50C with the Silentboost.

What voltage, shiro? And what did you use to put it under load, Prime95?

I only changed it from 166 FSB to 200 FSB, I ran it under memtest, it seemed pretty stable and such, but I had to ramp up my fan speeds, so its back down to 2500 now, I couldn't stand the noise :/

I use the silentboost and it is a nice cooler but is not silent, merely quiet. Replacing the fan would fix that of course. For a money-no-object purchase i would suggest looking at the spcr recommendend list and grab one of those nice thermalright heatsinks and an appropriate fan if it will fit you motherboard

I'm currently running a barton 2500+ at 3200+
1.6v vcore
Thermalright SLK-800 with a panaflo L1A at 12v
Being folding 24/7 for a week now
49c full load

I'd go for a thermalright or a swiftech with a panaflo fan

another vote for the best thernalright you can afford + L1A fan
this will give you a great cool/quiet combination.

atm I'm running a overclocked barton at 1.85V with this combo - I get low 50's at full load.

I guess i shall do it. Read the review.

Zalman CNPS-7000 Al-Cu or Cu, no contest.

At 5volts and modified with some damping it is the most silent cooler in it's cooling catetory.

It is heavy and expensive, but it's ability to still cool CPUs with lower volumes, is superior to all other air cooling heat sinks I've seen reviewed (including the ones referenced above).

Link here lists the Abit NF7-S as incompatible.

I'm not sure about revision 2 of the NF7 though, which includes mounting holes.
EDIT: found this "The Zalman requires a corner to be cut off to avoid bending a cap on NF7 boards"

:(

I've got a Zalman 7000A on my NF7-S board... fits just fine. You'll have to cut the clip though, which can be a pain. I actually spent a lot of time filing it off with a metal file because I didn't have the right tools.

Just do a search... there should be lots of posts about using the Zalman on an NF7-S.

I'm running the TT SilentBoost on a 2500+ o/c'd to 3200+ (2.2ghz) at 1.74v. The SilentBoost is noisy at its highest setting, so I have mine running 1050rpm - close to its lowest setting - which is pretty quiet - in any event the noise is drowned out by my Antec Sonata 120mm fan and PSU. CPU temps are about 51 degrees idle and about 57 degrees under load.

How good are the Zalman 7000A on a overclocked sys? I also have NF7-S ver2 and OC 1700+ above 3200+ running at 1.75v. Currently using SLK800 with Panaflo H via sunbeam reheous @ lower rpm. Temp is around 45c idle and mid 50's c under load.

Look here:

Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu achieves almost as good results as SLK-900 does, but with much less noise.
