Igloo Silent Breeze 462?

Post by Avenger » Fri Mar 19, 2004 7:03 pm

I've read some good reviews of this product, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know of a good source in the US? Or is there some reason they are no longer available?

If no one knows of a good source, can anyone recommend a good alternative. I would prefer to stay away from the really heavy models, and I'm looking for something quiet out of the box.

It should be available, at least Glacial Tech lists Silent Breeze 462 III on their own web page.

However, for alternatives you might want to look at some comparative heatsink rankings and read individual reviews for promising models to find out the weight of each one:

http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/socketA.asp

My recommendations for less than 400 g weighing socket A heatsink/fan combos that offer a decent noise/cooling ratio:

Aerocool Deep Impact DP-101 (400 g) - also uses succesfully by forum members here as well as it's more weighty successor DP-102
http://www.aerocool.com.tw/aerocool-fil ... /dp101.htm

Of course if you go to a 500 gram league, you can get various popular Thermalright models that fit 92mm fans (or 120mm with a shroud). I'm using SLK-800 with 120mm fan and a fan shroud (adapter) quite succesfully myself. Not silent, but reasonably quiet inside a damped/insulated case.

And let's not forget the SPCR perennial favourite: Zalman CNPS-7000A-AlCu (at. c 450 gr) with very good noise/cooling ratio.

Other possible alternatives from SPCR recommended components page:

As for out of the box quietness, I'd say that Zalman models are your best option as they have adjustable fans. That is, if you can tolerate the weight of the heatsink. It's not that bad imho, but I understood it was important to you.

I own an Igloo Silent Breeze II (two of them in fact). They were both purchased from Newegg a long time ago. At the time, Newegg was the only retailer that I could find in the U.S. Newegg has since dropped them, so I don't know if there is a distributor in the US anymore.

My experience with them has been pretty good. They cool well and are quiet. I recently replaced one of them with the Swiftech sold by Silenx. The surface of the Swiftech is a lot smoother and the overall quality is better. However, that Swiftech heatsink cost as much as my computer case and it weighs a ton.

The second Silent Breeze II that I am still running was quiet at first, but the fan has developed a whining, clicking noise. It uses a 70 x 70 x 25 mm fan. It is still running fine (I'm listening to it as I write this). It is cooling an Athlon XP 1800+ running at standard speed. I've decided to replace it with this:

The Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2TC was recommended here:

The 2TC is light and is supposedly very quiet. It doesn't look like it cools as well as the Glacialtech, but for my purposes it looks fine. It may be a good replacement for you depending on your processor speed.

It uses a 70 x 70 x 25 mm fan
This is an old thread, but I still wanted to add that you can install a 80mm fan to Silent Breeze II.

I'm going to do that for my unit and forget about replacing it. Thanks for this thread, it helped me to choose.. [/quote]
