how to apply arctic silver 5 to athlon 64 cpu?

I was wondering how to do this - i will be building my first computer and don't want to screw up - i've heard of people applying some between the heat spreader and cpu AND the spread and hsf - would it be beneficial to take the heat spreader off? or what is the best way - my cpu/mobo comes tomorrow

Some people spread it evenly on the CPU and others follow the directions and just place a dab on the center (which gets squished into place when you put on the heatsink). As long as you don't apply far too much or far too little, you should be fine.
