zalman retention clup

this might be covered but how good is the mounting method on the zalman 7000alcu. does the retention clip actually push down on the cpu?

It works great w/ the stock p4 retention clip. Pain free installation.

The stock retention clip works very well. B/c it's made for being compatible with all kinds of AMD sockets, it might touch some capacitors on a few boards, but it's easy to snip off a bit and doesn't impede the performance.

mmm, how strong is it though, For the A64 mounting style, theres just a blackplate and 2 screws. I normally use stock cooling bout i can see that most of the pressure is gonna be on those 2 screws.

The pressure is always on the two bolts and backplate on any A64 HS. This is no different. I've been using a Z7000 on my A64 setup -- no problems. It's sturdy enough.

I am in the process of rebuilding my computer and bought a MSI K8N Neo Platinum motherboard and got a Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu to go with it. I discovered that the backplate that comes mounted on the MSI board doesn't seem to work with the Zalman mount. The Zalman comes with a backplate that would work, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to remove the MSI backplate without endangering the motherboard!
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I can't see any screws holding on the MSI backboard, as far as I can tell it must be adhered on! Does anyone know how to remove a backplate like this? Fortunately I purchased a retail A64 so I can use the stock heatsink/fan, but I'd rather mount the Zalman.

Too much trouble to swap the motherboard out, unless I encounter more issues...I really wanted a nForce 250gB board for the native SATA, and it's working perfectly on that front...Has anyone heard of a safe method for removing the MSI backplate? I have seen in another forum that this can apparently be done, but no real details were given. I don't want to risk damaging my board for the sake of using the Zalman.

msi backplate

The stock backplate is glued to the motherboard. I used a combination og pulling the backplate and using a small flat screew driver to remove it. It takes time and patience.

When you get it open a little you will be able to see the glue. Just slice it of with the screw driver.

Don't get impatient, that can be expensive.

I swapped my board in for the ak89 max however. I didnt like the overclocking ability, and only 2 of the 4 fan connectors had rpm monitoring sensors.

Good luck! :D
