Mounting Zalman 7000a on an A64 Mobile

Post by POLIST8 » Wed Jul 28, 2004 10:33 am

I'm putting together an AMD 64 Mobile system and have the Zalman 7000a.

The only question I have is regarding the backplate - do you or do you not take off the cardboard that is stuck to the plate? I thinking yes, but want to make sure since I haven't seen any documentation regarding this.

Any responses/questions are welcome.

Thanks!

The site of Zalman in Korea has a How to Install link on the bottom of the left column. It shows a animation.

You have to leave the cardboard on the backplate. It prevents the metal backplate from shortcircuiting the traces on the back of your motherboard.

i think that (s)he means with referance to the fact that its an athlon 64 *mobile*.. and therefore that it doesn't have an IHS, and therefore sits 'lower' on the motherboard than a regular athlon 64..?

maybe i'm wrong and it was just a general Q??

Yes, the mobile will sit lower. I just ran into this not long ago. First, Leave the card board on the pack plate to keep from shorting anything.

Second, email this gentleman at Zalman and tell him you have the mobile Athlon 64 and need the shorter mounting screws for the Zalman 7000.

I am not sure he will answer your email directly, but he is the person who emailed me and send me the shorter mounting screws.

Or, maybe compensate the lack of heatspreader by placing a piece of sheet metal with the same thickness between the mounting clip and the heatsink, under the fan. Haven't tried though.
