Cooling an XP 1800+

Post by roo » Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:12 am

hi guys,
i have an XP1800+ with an Asus A7N8X non-deluxe rev 1.04.
I currently have a volcano fan on it but it's about to give up. I was wondering if I could undervolt this mobo and maybe go passive cooling?

thanks
marc

Not likely without a different heatsink. And not likely that you'll be able to undervolt with that CPU/board combo.

heheheh

cross your fingers you don't have a Palomino CPU and no undervolting for you with that Asus board. They don't allow for it.

passive cooling?
No, but with a good heatsink such as a Zalman 7000 or one of the ThermalRights, you can use a low rpm fan that will be essentially silent. More so if that 1800+ is a Tbred and not a Palomino core.

I have a 1700+ Tbred B with a Thermalright SLK900-A, I have oced it to 2.1GHz and under Linux I can watch a movie without any fan and the highest temp I got was 45C, so I think that if yours is a Tbred, you can go pasive with a SLK900-A

I don't know, but under my temps for sure.
Just stick a 92mm fan on it at 4V or something like that, which means 0 noise, or get a 120x38 fan, put it in your side panel and duct it to the SLK. ;)

A month ago I recommended the SLK900-A go a guy that doesn't have holes in his mobo and he's really really happy with his SLK900-A.

Considering I used to get by with 2 SLK-800As on a Dual processor system (2400+ Tbred B), I think your temperatures will be perfectly fine. Assuming you plan on actually using a fan with that (the SLK doesn't cool well fanless).

with my adjustable volcano running at 2045 rpm, Asus probe tells me CPU temp is 31 celcius and MB temp is 35. I think they got those two inverted.

I've got an Antec case with an Antec True330 PSU, its fan is going at 1400 rpm.

The power supply's fan is the noisiest thing right now... below is a shot of Asus probe. What should I do to silence my system?
thanks

Asus mobo's always show almost 10 celcius lower temp on the CPU than it actually is.

You can either replace the fan or replace the PSU itself. There is a lot of information on this site on how to both.
