3.0 versus 3.06 GHz Northwoods P4's

Post by dfrost » Thu Feb 17, 2005 2:14 pm

OK, this isn't exactly a cooling question.

There are many references to Northwoods P4's at both 3.0GHz and 3.06 GHz, often in the same table, etc. What are the effective differences?

Mine says:
Intel (M)(C) '01
Pentium (R) 4
3 GHZ/512/800
SL6WK Malay
L417B200

MBM says that the clock rate is 3063 MHz (not OCing, yet). Which one do I have?

Pertinent to CPU cooling, I'm quite pleased with the temps in this system: Idle/Load - CPU 34/45, Case 29/30, PWM 35/50.

Hi dfrost, the P4 3.06 is the older chip and runs on the 133 (533) front side bus. The P4 3.0 is part of the newer P4C range and runs on the 200 (800) front side bus. The P4 being the bandwidth hungry thing it is the 3.0 will out perform the 3.06. I think the "C" revision may have brought other changes but I don't remember clearly.
Yours is definitely one of the newer "C" series (The 3.0 model) and the 3.06 clock speed is due to your motherboard over clocking slightly. It's not unheard of for motherboards to do this, gives them a “performance advantage” at "stock speed" in benchmarks. It's nothing to worry about at all due to the very small increase.

SebRad,

Thanks for the clear explanation. I'll sleep better tonight with this knowledge. :)

Sorry for the offtopic post, but can I ask how you attached the NB32J to your motherboard? I have an Abit IC7-G, and I am trying to find an epoxyless way of mounting a fanless NB heatsink on it.

Zillidot,

Anticipating others would ask that question, here's a separate thread wtih photo links to the NB clip I made from a bicycle spoke:

dfrost,
Thanks for the info! Hopefully I'll have time to try it soon, the stock NB fan is driving me crazy...
