Removing Arctic Silver with IMS?

Post by dAvies.lOcker » Sun Feb 20, 2005 3:08 pm

I realise this is an age old topic, but i was wondering whether 70% IMS (Industrial Methylated Spirits) could be used to remove old thermal grease? Or Acetone?

Isn't it at all similiar to rubbing alcohol?

If not, i will buy some of the Akasa TIM cleaner...the Arctic cleaner isnt out here in the UK.

I only ask cos there is loads of IMS and Acetone in the lab at uni, so wud save me a bit of cash if it could work.

Cheers

Acetone works well, and is on the Arctic Silver instructions as a recommended method.

I have no idea. Never messed with the stuff. Acetone or alcohol do the trick, even for old crusty thermal pads, so why mess with something stronger? I'd be worried about a potential reaction with the plastics involved

I just use the highest % rubbing alcohol in my house, usually either 70 or 99%. A few Q tips and i'm done.

Melamine foam is a surprisingly good cleaner. No wetting with anything, just wipe the goop off. I've even tried it against AS's own cleaning solution, tempwise got the same results. Plus, it's lint-free :)

IMS probably contains methanol in addition to the ethanol found in rubbing alcohol. For cleaning and desinfecting purposes this doesn't make a difference. But don't drink it, you can go blind if you do.
