Best Athlon XP heatsink that doesn't need mounting holes
Hi, I just purchased a uATX motherboard for my HTPC and am trying to get a heatsink that is as quiet as possible. I'll be underclocking and undervolting a mobile Athlon XP, so I'm even hopeful I can do with either no fan at all, or a very very quiet one.
Anyway, I need help figuring out the best heatsink out there, but that does not require mounting holes on the motherboard. Any suggestions?

Thermalright SI-97 is another option, but its size may be a problem... since you've bought a uATX mobo I'm guessing you're going to use a small case.
I'm not sure you'll get the Arctic Cooling merlyn suggested to run fanless, but it is a very nice HSF combo that runs pretty quiet.

The AeroCool HT-101 can be ducted to your rear case fans pretty easily and run without a fan mounted directly on the HS.

I agree with the above posts. First I would go for the Thermalright SI-97 if you have the room for it, but if not, the Arctic Cooling. Actually there is a better version than the TC, it's the Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M which you can select three different top speeds. It's still temperature controlled (according to their website), which if you're undervolting, you could most likely use the lowest setting at all times and it would be just fine. Note that the 2M version is the only Arctic Cooling model available at NewEgg currently (for Socket A). It also has the advantage of being about half the price, includes a fan, it's pretty much guaranteed that it would fit, and would not need a FanMate (or other voltage controller means) to adjust the speed/sound.
If you do end up going with the Arctic Cooling, you may however also want to pick up a lapping kit to smooth out the surface, since they aren't as flat as some people like from the factory. The kits from David Brown at Easy PC Kits are very highly rated.

I was going to go for an HT-101 in my HTPC but it wouldn;t fit my case (Coolermaster ATC-620) - a DP-102 works absolutely great though.
Current temps on a fully loaded XP-M 2400+ 1.35V is 34oC CPU - but it is quite cold around the case... but I don't remember the CPU ever going over 40oC.

I also have an Athlon XP mobo w/o mounting holes. I have a Nexus XP-3200. I can hear vibration noise from it. I don't want to lower the speed due to the temp already being high. I saw this post and am tempted to get the ARCTIC COOLING Copper Silent 2M due to lower price and higher CFM at a lower dB. Has anyone tested the ARCTIC COOLING Copper Silent 2M vs. Thermalright SI-97 with Nexus 92mm? What were the results? Does the Nexus 92mm fan caused vibration noise like the Nexus 70mm fan?

Hello:
Don't forget the Alpha PAL8952 It has a fairly compact footprint, and you can put a quiet fan of your choice on it -- or duct it, since it works better with the fan "sucking" air up through the HS.
The only possible caveat is that the frame that clips onto (all 3 pairs of) the clips is about 3/16" wide (~5mm) and there can't be anything like a small capacitor too close to the socket on any of the four sides.

I'd suggest the S-PAL8055, since its actually made for the Socket A platform, unlike the PAL8952.NeilBlanchard wrote:Hello:

If yo can get one - an SLK-900a thermalright will cool an XP 3200+ at stock voltage with a 1500rpm fan in an Australian summer. So with an underclocked cpu (particularly if undervolted) the fan speed should be able to be slowed down a fair bit.
They are low profile compared to the SI-97 but not as efficient.
Getting one could be an issue , maybe ebay

Hello Steve:
You are, of course, correct! I have forgotten that Socket A is Socket 462; not 478...my mistake. I even have an 8055 sitting here on my desk.sthayashi wrote:I'd suggest the S-PAL8055, since its actually made for the Socket A platform, unlike the PAL8952.NeilBlanchard wrote:Hello:

I've been using an AC Copper Silent 2 on a Sempron 2400 (not the same I know) for a couple of months and I've been very happy with it. MBM5 reported temps of 37deg C at idle/ 43-45deg C load (playing games while defraging, no Prime95 yet) with chassis air guide or 47/53 deg with a foam filter on. Filter cuts the low noise down further but the temps go up. Noise wise, it's a very smooth sounding fan (2200rpm I think), cleaner and possibly quieter than some Panaflo L1As I have - virtually inaudible outside the case, even with the rear fan switched off.
Possibly worth sanding the base down a bit as there were noticeable machining marks on it, though a few minutes with some diff grades of emery paper and you're done. 'fraid I can give before and after temps as I did it before fitting For a low-medium power CPU I think it's a really sweet low cost cooler, though it'd probably be a bit overfaced with anything more powerful.
Very interested in that 2M model - anyone seen it in EU/ UK retailers?

Anyone's tried Arctic Cooling Copper Lite ( Copper Silent 3 )? Vibration shouldn't be a problem with this.

Its a pity it isn't TC .
