why is my AthlonXP 2GHz + 7000alcu so hot @ load?

system specs

AthlonXP Mobile 2GHz (10x200MHz, ~1.6v)
Zalman 7000A-AlCu @ 7v, ~1975rpm
Asus A7N8X-DLX 1.04 (vdd mod 1.8v)
FX5800 NU (2D: 250/400MHz, 3D: 400/800)
Zalman 80-A + 80mm L1A @ 7v
Antec Sonata
1x120mm Antec @ 6v intake
1x120mm Coolermaster LED @ 6v exhaust
Truepower 380S

When i run Prime95 for a few minutes, I get the following temps

Diode- 64C
Socket 52C
Case 33C
GPU core 52C
GPU ambient 53C

I've tried Shinetsu and Arctic Silver 3 with same results. When I take off the 7000a, the thermal paste imprinted onto the heatsink base seems to indicate proper contact.

Any ideas?

btw, room temperature here where i live is ard 28C...

Not sure overall, but two things that stand out to me is 1) the ambient temp of 28C, and 2) vcore of 1.6v.

I'm running an XP-M overclocked to 2.2 (11x200) in the low 50s at load. Yet my vcore is undervolted to 1.52. When I had vcore higher, the temp was definitely much higher.

I would suggest undervolting as much as you can, then see what you get.

Also, an obvious thing to check is make sure your cpu cooler is clean and not clogged with dust and lint.

In the past I've found high CPU temps to be caused by high ambients (bad case ventilation). Could this be the case here? Any chance for you to measure the fan intake temp above the CPU?

the GPU ambient is probably not indicative of casing temp. It is a sensor on the video card, because the GPU core and GPU ambient temps are usually very close even if i'm runnig the rig out in the open.

I don't have the necessary equipment to measure temps. :(

unfortunately, I can't select lower than 1.575 vcore on my mobo and cutting bridges is risky. I don't want to ruin a US $100 processor.

I should think the highish gpu temperatures are because it's being cooled by a zalman heatpipe. I used to have a similar setup with the same motherboard and my gpu (and cpu) temperatures dropped over 5 degrees when I swapped the zalman gpu cooler for an arctic cooling vga silencer.

I guess the hot cpu is probably being caused by a combination of the hot ambient temperature, the gpu cooler heating the case near the cpu and maybe the highish vcore. Although my mobile XP 2500+ is currently folding 100% load, at 2.4GHz, 1.7v and it's averaging 51 degrees on the diode (case 26 deg, ambient 20 deg), the zalman 7000A-Cu is at 5v. Maybe I just got lucky with the cpu!
