AMD 3800+ Venice and XP-120 temperatures?

Post by Xfinity » Tue Jul 12, 2005 2:09 am

Using Folding@Home to stress the system, I got the following temperatures as result with closed case and AcoustiPack installed:

Ambient (Room): 32 degrees Celsius
Ambient (Case): 34.6 degrees Celsius

CPU Idle: 45 degrees Celsius
CPU Load: 54 degrees Celsius

I used AS5 when fitting the XP-120 on the CPU.

The question is, is the temperature for the CPU "safe"? Should I reseat the XP-120?

Thanks!

Doing the math to determine what my approximate °C/W is.

(load - ambient)/wattage = °C/W

(54-32)/89 = 0.25°C/W

And checking the review made by SPCR of the XP-120 gives me reference figures.

Conclusion, a little to high but that can be the effects of a closed case with acoustipack.

32C ambient must feel like a sauna

Taking that into account those temps look just fine to me. Anything less than 60C is comfy for an athlon64 at load in my experience.

Thanks for the reply! I think so too after having calculating the °C/W value.

Yeah, 32C is damn hot - the weather in Sweden is pretty good at the moment :D.

i dont think F@H is a good "load" test? :P

"32C" ! who said sweden was just a snow ball!

it's been around 30 here in UK for a few days now  :P

I think its pretty good . but I will look at the temperatures when running the heat test in Prime95 as well.

Sounds like you got nice weather as well

Prime95 test

Ambient (Room): 28.7 degrees Celsius
Ambient (Case): 32.1 degrees Celsius

CPU Idle: 44 degrees Celsius
CPU Load: 52 degrees Celsius

(load - ambient)/wattage = °C/W

(52-28.7)/89 = 0.262°C/W

Conclusion, I am not happy with the heat transfer of the CPU. I think I will reseat the CPU and check the airflow in my case.

89 Watts is the TDP of the processor _family_.

That is, the highest performing processor of that family will AT MOST use 89 watts under high stress activities.

Your processor is probably not using 89 watts.

Hello:

I'd say your temps are totally fine! If you can undervolt the CPU, then they will drop, but given your relatively high ambient and case temps, the CPU temp is very good!

Thanks!

I cancelled the reseating in the last minute, didn't have the time to do it today and I wanted to try the Cool'n'Quiet™ Technology before doing anything. Cool'n'Quiet didn't help reducing my temperatures, but it seems to have helped lowering my voltages .

Got a new figure on the power consumtion: 31W

Prime95 test

Ambient (Room): 30.8 degrees Celsius
Ambient (Case): 38.5 degrees Celsius

CPU Idle: 44 degrees Celsius
CPU Load: 55 degrees Celsius

(load - ambient)/wattage = °C/W

( 55-30.8 )/31W = 0.76°C/W

Conclusion: hehe, rather crappy . Reseated the heatsink to ensure that I didn't mess up with the AS5. But I got the same figures . Any suggestions? A better case without AcoustiPack?

I got a similar setup and get the same temps when my room has a ambient temp around 32C. The only difference is that I have everything in a antec p180. In my old case, the area around the psu built up and would easily add 10C+. Considering the amd 3700 is supposed to run cooler than my old amd 2700, I'm not sure if I messed up installing the xp120. I would have thought that my temps would actually be better than 45 idle.

Thanks for the info on your setup and temps AndyD! :D I am very intrested in the P180 and will problably build my next system with that case.
