Epia HSF replacement

Post by Splinter » Wed Sep 07, 2005 9:12 am

Does the Epia V series just use a standard chipset heatsink?

It's got a 40mm fan on it and I think it'll drive me nuts. I'm hoping I can swap it out for a passive cooler and just get a 120mm fan blowing over the whole board.

it's an 800mhz processor, so it shouldnt get THAT hot

Well my EPIA is 733mhz. I removed the fan/heatsink and used a Zalman passive. It runs under 40C usually. The only fan in the case is one 80mm PSU fan......I installed a half-ass duct from the fan, so it sucks in air about 1" from the Zalman. Been working ok over two years so far.

If you're really adventurous, you can try out this passive mod! I thought this looked really good:
Passive EPIA 1GHz, Zalman 80-HP

But otherwise, just about any northbridge cooler with a heatsink you could use, the Zalman 32s, 47s, or some of the Thermal Right NB heatsinks etc... As long as you have amazing case air flow over it.

SolarPC sells replacement Via EPIA heatsinks. A bit more expensive than throwing a Zalman NB cooler on it, but this should work much better.

I have epia V 800.
I've just unscrewed oryginal fan (without removing oryginal heatsink). I have 80mm fan @5V blowing at the heatsink. When underclocked to 400MHz - heatsink is cool to the touch. @800MHz it is hot to the touch, but not burning hot - say 45'C.

I didn't removed oryginal heatsink because it was GLUED to the cpu, and I was to lazy to scrub and lap the cpu after removal.

But I can assure you that blue (tall) or even gold zalman chipset heatsink will be perfectly ok.
