p4 temperatures i don't like..... with reason?

Post by klankymen » Sun Dec 04, 2005 12:16 pm

my dad wants to silence his p4 socket 478 2.8GHz system (dont know if its a prescott or whatever), and so the first thing i did after checking the noise sources was check out the temps. my dad doesn't game, or really do anything at all, he just multitasks alot and thats about all the load the comp will see.

so i rebooted after the pc had been running for i dont know how long, and checked the bios. he has the stock intel HSF at 3k rpm and it seems to idle 57°C (if i remember correctly, this was last week) which seems like a very high temperature to me. im an AMD guy and i know that intels are hotter, but 50s idle seems very hot to me. is the heatsink just badly mounted? or is this typical for a p4?

considering this is very hot would a ninja, or a XP/SI-120 with a 5V nexus be enough to cool it sufficiently?

this is in a sonata, so the 120mm case-fan (due to be nexu-fied or yate looned soon) is right behind the cpu heatsink.

its a stock intel heatsink, you expected better? lol

almost every aftermarket heatsink on the market is going to perform better than a stock heatsink. so yes, the ninja will definatly be enough for it, you may need a low speed undervolted fan on it but that will still be inaudible to most people

I had the 3.0 northwood P4 with the stock fan and it usually idled at like 30.

57°C idle is high for P4 2.8 even for Prescott. It's either a bad-mounting or a bad case airflow, or both.

I have a P4 2.8C (Northwood) with CNPS 7000 Cu @ 800 rpm - it's idle at 38°C (room temp+12°C).

So a Ninja or SI-120 with 5v Nexus could be plenty good for your dad's machine. :)

Almost certainly a furry heatsink full of dust. Check that first as it can easily make up 20 degrees.

ive seen a prescott idle at 55-60C and thats after i gave the HSF a full clean.

remember not all CPUs are created equal so just leave it as is (but clean it of coarse and check its seated properly) then if you encouter stability issues seek better cooling (which you are anyway i presume)
