Best socket 754 cooler fitting in a Silverstone LC10M

Post by Pjotor » Thu Jul 06, 2006 10:45 pm

Hi guys,

I have just bought most of the parts for an HTPC build. The stock socket 754 will be exchanged for something else. Because the socket is new to me, I don't know much about good coolers.

There are some size restrictions in the case. There is a strut right above where the heatsink is, and the new heatsink must fit under it. The clearance is 11.5cm from the MB surface to the strut.

I would definitely prefer a tower style cooler for easy ducting and good airflow, but anything goes. Which one would you recommend? I want something as quiet as possible (duh).

I obviously have to embarrass (sp?) myself for bumping my own post. Come one, someone must have been in need for a not-too-tall, good, and, quiet cooler for socket 754 processors :?

I've been pretty happy with my Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TC:

It's pretty cheap and fairly quiet. I never measured it, but the product sheet says the cooler is 42 mm tall. I'm not sure that includes the fan, but even so I don't think the total height could exceed 112 mm.

I cut out the strut and put in an Aerocool HT101 ducted to the back. Works pretty well.

Now that's interesting. I have been thinking along those lines, but I haven't quite dared to do it because I feared the case would become unstable. Have you had any such problems?

Hi, I've run Sempron 2800+ on the retail cooler hard wired to 5v with no problem and good temps. Perhaps not quiet enough for the most demanding but pretty quiet all the same. Zalman 7000 series is short and has lots of cooling capacity relative to recent AMD 64 CPUs but would be hard to duct. Thermalright Si97/120/XP120 might be possible with the fan sucking off the heatsink and ducted to the rear or with just the rear case fans ducted to the heatsink.
Edward Ng has XP120 on A64 3000 with no fan but the side vent/duct comes down on to the heatsink and is the main/only air intake so the rear 120mm fan pulls quite a bit of air through it.

Shorter Tower heatsink

Also have a look back through the SPCR cooling reviews see if there's anything else that might work for you.

No problems with stability. Case is still very sturdy but I wouldn't rest a 21" crt on it. I actually have some problems cooling hotter processors with my panaflow at 5V though. I use a sempy 2600+ but when i stuck in my new A64 3400+ it got kinda hot. Likely a result of the low flow from the single panaflo. I'm thinking a nexus would flow better and at lower volume.
