Tuniq Tower 120, Thermaltake Big Typhoon, and Scythe Ninja
i keep on hearing on overclock.net that the Tuniq Tower 120 was the BEST cooler, follewed by the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, and finally the Scythe Ninja. now i want to know if that's true in terms of cooling performance vs. noise vs. bulk (weight/size). i admit, i'm a bit biased towards the Ninja because it's a great cooler, lightweight, and fits my case perfectly. now, it's time to settle this, will SPCR do a three way shoot-out?

Brendan, you have inadvertantly wandered into the wrong church. Overclockers worship the great god Maximum Cooling At All Costs Including Noisy Fans. SPCR favors the deity Adequate Cooling As Quietly As Possible. The best equipment in one church may well be the very worst equipment in the other church. Given your interest in overclocking, you would do well to ignore any HSF recommendations you read on this site.

Madshrimps did a review a few months ago that showed the TT120 beating the Ninja by a few degrees C, even at moderate airflow, although it's quite obvious the TT120 was optimized for high airflow (>40cfm). From the recent review here of the Thermalright Ultra120, it looks like it MIGHT give the TT120 a run for it's money.cyberspyder wrote:oh no no. i didn't mean it that way, i don't OC anyways. just wanted to see if it was true.

ok, on to another topic. i was planning to get the Thermalright XP-90 (regular version) for my SKT 478 P4 (because it's LOUD and overheating), except i don't have enough room for a fan (the XP-90 is 7.5 cm in height-i only have room ofr 8.5 cm tall coolers), so can i use the cooler passively? look:
plenty of clearance...
dimensions...

Not really. I can't say I'm fully versed in the lower profile coolers - especially those for S478. Tough to find S478 coolers worth anything.cyberspyder wrote:then can you recommend something that'll fit?

Have you looked at the Zalmans/Scythe models?

The XP-120 is an excellent HS (though more recent models have surpassed it). The big issue with it is MOBO compatability. It's not uncommon for RAM, Caps, etc. to be in the way. TR might have a MOBO compatability chart for the XP-120.cyberspyder wrote:the Thermalright XP-120 should fit since it's only 6.3cm tall (8.8cm with a 25mm thick fan). another choice is the Zalman CNPS-7000 CU/ALCU (the 7700 is too big).

Check Silverstone NT03 and NT05, those seems to be nice low:cyberspyder wrote:ok, on to another topic. i was planning to get the Thermalright XP-90 (regular version) for my SKT 478 P4 (because it's LOUD and overheating), except i don't have enough room for a fan (the XP-90 is 7.5 cm in height-i only have room ofr 8.5 cm tall coolers)

As for cooler for your primary PC I would suggest taking Thermalright SI-128 as candidate instead of Big Typhoon, in XS forums one poster had compared it to Big Typhoon "lapped to near mirror finish" and SI-128 was 3C cooler which fits quite nicely to how much better SI-128 is compared to SI-120. (which is equal to BT basing to Madshrimps review)
Also SI-128 is ~20% (with added fan) lighter and weight is little closer to motherboard meaning less stress/torque bending motherboard.
