Zalman CNPS9500 on ZM-CS1?

Post by tima » Sat Sep 02, 2006 2:15 pm

I watched the installation video for the CNPS9500, and it mounts onto Socket 478 in a way indistinguishable (movie-wise, anyway) from the CNPS7000. Zalman makes an adapter to mount the CNPS7000 on Socket 775, and given the 7000/9500 Socket 478 mounting similarity, I was wondering if the CNPS9500 would mount onto Socket 775 via the ZM-CS1 adapter. That would save having to remove the motherboard to switch from the 7000 to the 9500. Any ideas?

So basically you want to know if the ZM-CS1 you're using at the moment can stay put and be used for the 9500? Or did I misinterpret that?

The adpaters look completely different, so my guess would be no. Also the 9500 comes with a back plate, whereas the CS1 doesn't. The 9500 is taller and heavier (than the AlCu of the version anyway) so installing a backplate would probably be a good idea.

You did not misinterpret; that's what I'm asking.

Did you watch the installation videos at the Zalman web site? The 9500 mounts in Socket 478 using what appear to be the same bars the 7000 uses; those bars go into the slots in the 478 retention mechanism. So it appears to me the 7000 and 9500 mount using the same mechanism into Socket 478, and since the ZM-CS1 adapts the 7000 to LGA775, in effect providing those same two bars for the 7000 clip to screw into, it would seem there's a reasonable chance it would work for the 9500 as well. As for the weight, the 9500 is only 530 g, so that shouldn't be an issue compared to the 7000-AlCu's 445 g. As for the height being an issue, well, HSFs designed for LGA775 such as the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro are pretty tall, weight 520 g, and install using push pins, so if anything, I'd expect the ZM-CS1's screws and washers to be more stable.

From the review:

In front, the clips for the CNPS9500. Behind, the clips for the CNPS7000.
Both the height and the screw thread are different.

All I can say is kudos to the reviewer for his attention to detail. Thanks for bringing it my attention, even though it wasn't the answer I was hoping for.
