Noctua NH-U12F Heatsink - anyone actually used it yet?

Post by Stephen » Mon Jan 01, 2007 11:09 am

I've been researching HSFs for my impending build - Antec P180 case, Intel Bad Axe 2 mobo, and E6700 processor. I was leaning heavily to the Ninja but just ran across reviews of the Ncoctua NH-U12F Heatsink. It appaears to be roughly comparable to the Ninja in performance, but has a better system for attaching to the mobo.

Has anyone out there used it? I'm interested in whether or not it is as quiet or quieter than the Ninja, how well it really cools, and whether it is compatible with the E6700 and Bad Axe 2 mobo.

I installed NH-U12F couple fo days ago in my PC and noise level is what the fan gives you (very low). The whole system is now very low noise (smooth hum quality), the only "problem" device is 8800 GTX if you want to be really picky, its hum level raises slightly on full load.

Installation of NH-U12F was easy, the whole thing is beatifully crafted with feel of quality. It does not touch any motherboard components when installed.

CPU is about 29 at idle, about 50 on full simulated load (at least 10 degrees less than stock fan). My room is usually pretty warm, so adding 12cm front intake fan would lower those figures for sure. Also, 8800GTX generates upward heat which could be dealt with water cooling like http://www.dangerdenstore.com/product.p ... =48&page=1

My PC:
Antec P180B where all 3 fans replaced by Noctua NF-S12 800 fans
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5W DH Deluxe Wifi
Asus GeForce EN8800GTX
4 GB (2 Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4 4-4-4-12 800MHz) DDR2
Corsair HX620W Modular PSU
Western Digital Caviar RE WD3200YS 320GB system drive (everything else external: 4TB online only when needed).

This site has been very useful in building a quiet PC!

Would you say it is quieter than zalman or ninja?

I have not used those. I read tests and try to avoid buying every device just for trying it out :)

It is as quiet as the fan you put on it and how the fan is configured.

One way to make it ultra quiet might be to use something like two 12cm 800 Noctuas running at 500rpm (< 5 dB(A)), but one 1200prm I have there now is not noisy at all even at full speed.

BTW: I opened the side door and CPU temp fell to 23C. Need to check case ventilation more.

hi all,
what is the difference between the Noctua NF-S12-800 Case Fan, and the
Noctua NF-S12-1200 Case Fan???? (they are both 120 mm!)

thats one question i have, plus:

What in the earth does the ULNA do? (ultra low noise adapter).
I was thinking of using it like this:

As an intake case fan, for my antec lifestyle sonata2. Am i right, if i say that i can use the noctua 120mm case fan BOTH
1. in combination with the 4 pin connector on my mobo, but ALSO
2. in combination with a zalman fanmate2 on a 3 pin connector on my mobo.

By the way,.... this could sound like a stupid question, but... how the hell do i connect the fan to the U.L.N.A????

hmm, alot of the answers are solved when i went to
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article69 ... tml#noctua

thanks pcsilent

difference between 800 & 1200 is rpm
the ulna makes the fan speed drop, it lowers the fan speed.

and the other one, i guess its okay to first buy this baby, ditch the ulna, and buy myself a zalman fanmate FKUCK YEAH.

allright, and now its time for an orange juice.
