Going crazy!!!
Hi
The sound from my boxed Intel cooler is driving me crazy and would like to know, if anyone can recommend a cpu cooler for my socket 775 Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz that is:
- very quiet
- easy to install (let the mainboard stay in, if it's possible)
- reasonable size
- low/medium cost
So far I've been looking at:
* Arctic Cooling Alpine 7
* Zalman 7000 Cu or AlCu
* NorthQ 3310BLA Medium UFO
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Just got a Seasonic S12 PSU and it's SO QUIET!!!

Look into Thermalright coolers. They are on the large side, but work really good.
Thank you Angelkiller. It seems MST-9775 LE has everything I'm looking for. But I can finder any stores in Denmark selling it.[/url]

To MadsRH: What kind and how large is your case? How much space are we working with? What type of motherboard do you have? Can you provide a picture? The pic would help a whole lot. It is difficult for us to recommend a cooler, when the only limiting factor (size) is unknown. (And generally, I would point people to the HR-01 or the SI-128. Generally) Thanks!J. I have the same processor as MadsRH (775 Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz) and hence the same problem with noise. I didn't really consider noise when I ordered the PC and I'm now suffering the consequences!
Can anyone advise on the following:
Is it possible to replace the fan without removing the heatsink?
If not, which CPU coolers should I be looking at? I have a large case therefore I don't think cooler size will be an issue.
The other option seems to be wiring a resistor in line with the fan - but this seems a bit counter intuitive. I have Speedfan so can monitor temperatures but it does not let me override the cooling trigger point on my motherboard (ASRock 775Dual-880Pro).
Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer.

It depends on what type of cooler you already have. If it is Intel's stock cooler, not easily. If it is a proprietary cooler, maybe. Can you describe what you already have?Bakazan wrote:Is it possible to replace the fan without removing the heatsink?
Again, I'd look into Thermalright coolers. They are large, effective, and can be used with a slow spinning fan. For you look into a HR-01, Ultra 120, or SI-128. For a fan, try to find Nexus Yate Loon or Scythe S-Flex fans. All are very quiet. Hope that helps!
EDIT: And you may want to try the Scythe Ninja before anything else. I didn't recommend it because it has some mounting issues with socket 775. Read up on this before you consider the Ninja.
