Quiet cooling for ATi Radeon 9100?

Post by Echolot » Tue Apr 08, 2003 1:44 pm

I recently upgraded my PC and got a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9000, 64MB DDR-ram. It's okay for my needs, but it is too noisy.

I need too know, if I can get a new fan or a cooling system that fits the Radeon 9100 card in order to make the card more silent. The noise is really annoying.

Could Global Win FA420 (a fan) or Zalman ZM80A-HP be the answer?

Thanks for your attention.

TOTAL Overkill!

You might be able to get away with just unplugging the fan, but my suggestion would be to grab an old Heatsink and just drill away at it till it fits.

Echolot,

I've got an ATI Radeon 9000 that I've been running for over two weeks now with the fan unplugged. No problems at all. My case temps max at 41-42c. I've seen no artifacts when gaming and the standard heat sink doesn't get hot to the touch. As some folks have mentioned, on the mid priced video cards the fan is mostly a selling "feature" rather than a needed item.

I also have a (sapphire) 8500. Without any fan it runs too hot for comfort, though without any artifacts. I have a 5v panaflo L1A aimed at it, and am getting ready to replace the stock HS with one ripped form an old Voodoo 3 (beefy, but narrow enough to not take up another card slot).

As it is, the card only gets warm to the touch, but that pathetic little HS just has to go on principle. I doubt it would need any fan then.

saphire also makes a 9000 passively cooled.. maybe you could just see what size the heatsink is on that, and go from there..
