E6850 temp help?

Post by AstroCat » Thu Jul 26, 2007 5:59 am

Just built this system:

CPU: E6850 3.0 GHz 4MB 1333 MHz
MB: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX
Video: EVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
PS: CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W
Memory: (4G) 2 x Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AL804
HD1 OS/Apps: Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
part1: winxp 15G (OS plus misc)
part2: Vista64 25G (OS plus misc)
part3: Games 90G (figure 10 gig a game max, that's 9 games at a time... hehe)
part4: Apps 20G (10gig per OS, I usually burn 4-5gig for apps max, so that's double for both, should be fine)
HD2 Media: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
DVDR: LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM write LightScribe Technology Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model LH-20A1H-185
Sound: Creative 70SB046A00000 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series
Heatsink: Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme (with ArticSilver 5)
Case: P182
Fans for CPU and Case: (1 x Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E 120mm 1200RPM for CPU, 3 x Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm 800RPM for case fans)

CPU BIOS idle temps are: 41 or 45 with the front door shut on the P182
Board: 36-40
MCP: 47-50 (stock fan at 50%)

This seems kind of high to me. I have a couple very quiet AMD 4000+ systems, and the CPU and Board idle in the BIOS are around 41, so I don't know.

Any help? Thanks!

Do you have SpeedStep enabled in the bios?

I'm not at my home computer now, but if it is on by default then yes. That is not something I modified.

I am running a AMD S939 4200+ x2 and this idles at 50-55 degrees with a thermal right 120 + 120mm fan. Seems for such a quick processor that is pretty good around the 40's??

You both have too high temps I think. Do a check on SpeedStep/CoolnQuiet in the bios again. Strange enough, this is in many cases not enabled by default. (I remember a figure like 3 out of 4 boards are sold with that feature turned off)
Btw, low 40's for a 3GHz C2D is a much better figure than mid-50s for an AMD X2 4000+. I suspect something is either wrong with these temps (i.e. inaccurate) or some tweaking has to be done.)

I've heard before that the BIOS temps load a processor about 50%, and after feeling my HS while in the BIOS, I think that's at least partially accurate. Do you have any temp monitoring programs while in windows? This may give you a lower reading.

If in fact your temps are 41-45 during 50% load then that's great.

I think you are correct! I downloaded TAT and sure enough, both cores in the low 20's! When I apply the software full load test they both go in to the 40's. :)
