Stock vs. Ultra-120 Extreme Temps

Post by Blue_Sky » Thu Nov 22, 2007 8:25 pm

Hi guys,
I've recently swapped my stock heatsink on my E6750 for a Ultra-120 Extreme. There are a couple of things that I'm wondering about. Most reviews/roundups I've read show a pretty drastic change in temperatures, but after some testing I'm only getting a 1C drop in idle and 4C at load (intel TAT 100% both cores) after 30 min (at 1h and longer temps are the same). Also I'm a little worried about the amount of play in the heatsink. Even when everything is tightened to the maximum, it doesn't take much pressure to move it.

One thing to note is that a 500 RPM Scythe Kaze and a 1200 RPM Yate Loon are giving me the same temps, but I believe that is because of the proximity to my Nexus case fan - the HS is ~ 5 cm away.

I'll probably reinstall the heatsink when I next get time, as these numbers are pretty disappointing. Anyone have any thoughts?

I would check if the HS and IHS are level. If not you should lap them. What I have read the TRUE and IHS are not level.

My HR-01 had a very warped base. The IHS on the E6600 was not bad.

I did not bother installing it until I had lapped it so I don't know what difference it made.

I'm curious to what temperatures you are getting? Also, have you tried ducting the nexus to the TRUE?

At 500rpm you wont really see those amazing low temps from some of the reviews online, where they've been using everything from 1200 to 2000rpm fans on it...

My E6600 at stock speed will idle at about 31/33C with the Nexus 120mm on the cpu at ~500rpm and exhaust fans at 650rpm (rear, nexus) and 364rpm (top, scythe)

Idle is 30-33 in both cores, where when at load, it jumps to the high forties, and stops in the low sixties after a while (30min to 1h). I'm seeing no difference between the stock and the TRUE.

The Nexus is so close that I don't think there would be much of a difference. In fact, I think my case and GPU temps would go up if I did due to the geometry.

If I get time after the Christmas holidays, I might grind (the correct term BTW) the TRUE base and see if that coupled with a new AS5 application will make a difference.
